SDC fluoridation referendum applauded

“The move by the Southland District Council to hold a non-binding referendum to survey the views of local residents on the fluoridation of their water supplies is a fine example of real democracy in action and must be applauded” said Stephnie de Ruyter, DSC Leader.

Ms de Ruyter noted that the DSC opposes fluoridation of public water supplies.

“Fluoridation of public water supplies amounts to compulsory mass medication” Ms de Ruyter said. “The benefits of fluoridation have been grossly overstated and the harmful effects ignored.

“However, surveying the views of local residents through a referendum is sound democratic process. It reflects the commitment of Mayor Frana Cardno and her Councillors to serve their communities by seeking then fairly representing their views” she said.

Ms de Ruyter commented that the Otago District Health Board’s responsibility to provide fair and balanced information was an important aspect of the process. She observed that the ODHB’s performance in that area would be carefully monitored by the DSC as well as by nationwide lobby groups such as Fluoride Action Network NZ.

”It is crucial that the ODHB presents unbiased, balanced information which will enable people in Southland District Council communities to make an informed choice” Ms de Ruyter concluded.
